GE Research: Research Scientist Ceramics (EBC and TBC)

Job Description Summary

As a Research Scientist – Ceramics you will conduct research on advanced ceramic materials for high-temperature applications including Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBCs) and Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs). The focus will be on coating material composition, structure, and process development through process-microstructure-property relationships.

 

 

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic and applied research in developing and processing stable, high temperature oxide and non-oxide ceramic coatings of interest to GE businesses and external funding agencies
  • Characterize and identify degradation modes and approaches for improving the lifetime of high temperature material systems including EBCs and TBCs by tailoring composition and microstructure
  • Develop novel ceramics and coatings for various GE products including but not limited to CMC components in Civil and Military Jet Engines
  • Develop manufacturing processes for new and existing ceramics and coatings in a lab and production relevant environment
  • Identify technology trends in advanced ceramics and develop technical roadmaps to address them
  • Collaborate with GE's internal product departments, global R&D sites, external and internal material developers, strategic suppliers, and universities
  • Invent and patent when appropriate 
  • Prepare research proposals for external funding
  • Deliver effective presentations, reports, publications to GE Global Research, GE businesses, government agencies, and professional societies when appropriate

 

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramics Engineering, or a related discipline; or Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramics Engineering, or a related discipline with a minimum of three years of experience.
  • Experience in the development of oxide and non-oxide structural or non-structural ceramics or ceramic coatings
  • Demonstrated expertise in ceramic materials structure and property-process-microstructure relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new areas of research
  • Willing to work government funded programs
  • Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications 
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Characteristics

  • Hands-on experiences with EBC, TBC, or other ceramic coatings designed for extreme environments 
  • Experience in the development of advanced oxide systems such as those used in SOFCs and other high temperature applications
  • Understanding and working knowledge of microstructure-property relationships for EBCs or TBCs
  • Understanding of failure mechanisms, testing, and analysis for ceramics or coatings
  • Strong background in sintering science
  • Experience in application of thermochemistry, solid state chemistry, thermodynamics, and kinetics to high temperature processes and materials 
  • Experience with statistical analysis, data analytics, and statistical process control
  • Experience working on government contracts and preparing proposals
  • The ability to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment 
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

 

 

This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.
