COI Ceramics (COIC), a part of Northrop Grumman’s Space Components Business Unit,
leads the industry in the development, fabrication and production of High Temperature
Ceramic Matrix Composite Components and test articles. COIC is currently hiring an entry
level Manufacturing Engineer in our San Diego, CA location.
As a Manufacturing Engineer for COIC responsibilities will include both the planning and
execution phases of flight hardware fabrication for a wide variety of aerospace applications,
as well as maturing developing manufacturing technologies for low and high rate production
• Creates manufacturing planning, and directs/coordinates manufacturing processes on
factory (manufacturing) floor
• Develops, evaluates, matures, and improves manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge
of component design, composite materials and parts, composite fabrication and
processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, composite assembly methods,
and quality control standards
• May assist with design of manufacturing workflow, layout of equipment and workspace
for maximum efficiency for new production manufacturing facilities
• Communicates with design staff regarding product design and tooling to ensure
efficient production methods
• Develops purchase requests and partners with vendors to determine
product specifications of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products
according to specifications and quality standards
• Support proposal effort by estimating production times and related costs to provide
information for management decisions
• Communicates with management, engineering, and other staff regarding
manufacturing capabilities, and other considerations to facilitate production processes
• May incorporate inspection and test requirements into the production plan
• Investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure
product quality
• Provides guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification
requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques
• Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations

Basic Qualifications:
• B.S. from a STEM program, ideally in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or other
related field
• Minimum cumulative 2 years (BS), 0 years (MS) of relevant technical industry experience
in advanced aircraft or aerospace composite manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly
processes. Experience must include lay-up, machining, assembly and inspection of
composite materials and hardware
• Experience with problem solving, including identifying root cause and implementing
technical solutions to ensure product quality and improve processes

• Skilled at developing program bill of materials (BOM)
• Ability to read, interpret and create engineering drawings
• Strong organizational skills in managing time, projects and resources
• Effective team communication, collaboration, and influencing others skills
• Strong computer skills, and presentation development and delivery skills
• Must be a US citizen, willing to be subject to a US government security investigation and
able to obtain a DoD Secret collateral clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
• CAD experience (NX-10/Team-center or other CAD experience)
• Active or renewable DoD Secret collateral clearance
• Knowledge and application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
• Experience with maturing composite technologies from low TRL/MRL to LRIP
• Familiarity with heat generating equipment such as ceramic processing furnaces
• Manufacturing experience with alumina based oxide ceramic matrix composites, silicon
carbide/silicon carbide composites, carbon/carbon or similar high temperature material
• Experience with lean manufacturing concepts and knowledge and application of
continuous improvement philosophy and tools.
